5. How much memory do you think you’ll need?

For many, it might mean the end of their business, which is why it is critical that you not only back up regularly – weekly isn’t too frequent – you will also want to make sure your backup is working. Backup and then go through the process of retrieving your information to make sure your backup is working the way it is supposed to.

7. Set up your office to function smoothly.

This means comfortable equipment, and processes that make sense for you. Is your chair comfortable? How about your keyboard and your desk positioning? The more comfortable you are in your office, the more productive you’ll be. If your wrist is hurting and your back is stiff, you’re going to work slower and chances are you’re going to be distracted.

What about the system you have set up. Is everything you use frequently within easy reach? Is your phone close by? What about your files? Take a minute and look around your home office. Is it set up optimally for you?

8. Organization and storage.

Do you have a place for everything? Storage and organization is extremely important when creating your home office. If you skip this step you’ll spend much of your time trying to find things instead of getting them done. Create a paper organization and storage system – file cabinet. For paper files, it is recommended that you have a file for every bank account, taxes, receipts, expenses, payables, receivables, marketing and sub folders for each marketing project.

We live in a college town, and just eight miles down the road is another college town with a larger University. For a couple of years we owned a used furniture and antique store. It seemed that people would regularly come in wanting corner furniture pieces: hutches, entertainment stands and, especially, corner desks. We rarely had them in stock. We were dependent upon buying directly from the public (whatever they brought in to sell), so we did not have a lot of control over used furniture inventory. But, if I could have only ordered one item of used furniture from a supplier in the same manner as I purchased new items, the piece I would order would be corner desks.

I think that the main reason they were so hard to get a hold of used is because when people bought them, they would keep them longer than a regular style of desk. Corner desks are popular for many reasons. Though it is interesting to note that the two main reasons are opposite each other. They are: 1) corner desks can be a real space saver, and 2) corner desks can offer a lot more work area if you have the floor space.

First, people often do not have the room for a regular desk; they can take up quite a bit of area along a wall. A small corner desk with a hutch on top provides a lot of work space while using very little square footage. There are shelves for books and paper, and cubby holes for computer programs, games, discs and other peripherals, and sometimes lower shelve for computer towers. The main surface area of a corner desk is deeper than a standard desk. This allows a computer monitor to be set back further or to be pushed back when more room is needed to work longhand.

The other type of common corner desk, which takes up more a lot more space, is good for the person who needs a lot of room to work. This type of corner desks always reminds me of two desks pushed together in a corner. Smaller versions of this type of corner desk is called an L-shaped desk. One of my favorite benefits of this style desk is that you can put your computer on one surface, and with the simple 90° turn of your chair you have a clear work surface for other types of work. The support of one side of this desk style is often a filing cabinet, so though they may take up more floor space, they can still offer some space saving options. Many of these corner desks also have a hutch on top of one side. If you have the space, this is a great style of desk to use, plenty of space for both computer and non-computer work, shelving for books and display items, drawers to keep office supplies organized, and a lower computer tower shelf.

The best things about corner desks is that they come made in a variety of materials (wood, metal & glass, partical board, and I have even seen plastic in cool colors for a child’s room) and styles to fit any budget. Plus, it is hard to find an item that is designed to fit two opposite scenarios: not enough space and plenty of space! Though there are a lot of them out there, I just wish I could have found more used ones when I owned a used furniture store!

Clear and cut back any shrubs or bushes around your AC unit and keep it free of fallen leaves, grass clippings, foliage, and other dirt and debris. For optimum performance, keep the unit’s coils clean by re-reading the manual and following the steps on how to clean it.

Chris: Our government is careless by allowing too many people into the country, while many Britons are made unemployed. Have you seen the latest Office of National Statistics (ONS) figures showing that 6.5 million people born overseas were resident in the UK in the year to June 2008? This is, in fact, an increase of almost 300,000 on the year to June 2007.
Harris: But the percentage of non-UK nationals that is employed in the UK is 8% and this is lower than many of the countries people compare Britain with.
Chris: Why should the government provide over £1 million houses to immigrants at taxpayers’ expense?
Harris: Where were you in 2006 when immigration brought in an extra £12 billion to £18 billion in tax since 1998? East European workers were at the same time helping to reduce Britain’s trade deficit by an extra £1 billion every year.
Chris: Many of the record 400,000 graduates leaving university this summer will not find work in the recession. And between 10,000 and 18,000 highly-skilled migrants are expected to come to the UK this year to look for work without already securing employment. Magnum, what do you think?
Magun: Chris, for the umpteenth time, I’m Magun, not Magnum! Don’t you think it is wrong to link immigration to UK’s current financial crisis? Is that not playing on people’s fears? A recent study by the Institute for Public Policy actually showed that fewer migrants were arriving in the UK and more were leaving. More will leave because of the recession.
Harris: In the last decade for example, the level of emigration from the UK to Australia has more than doubled- 40,000 Britons moved to Australia in 2007, while 23,000 say that they will stay there permanently.
Chris: But why should non- EU economic migrants be allowed to come here to look for work? The number of non-UK born workers employed in Britain went up by 214,000 to 3.8 million last year, according to the ONS. Yet the number of UK-born workers fell by 278,000 to 25.6 million over the same period. Why should the Government, issue a record 150,000 work permits to non-EU citizens last year alone just as the ONS released the unemployment figures, which showed that number of people out of work had risen to 1.97 million? The figures showed that in the 12 months to fourth quarter of last year, employment of all workers in the UK, both UK and non-UK born fell by 59,000.
Magun: hasn’t the UK Border Agency further tightened the noose on all highly skilled professionals wishing to come to the country? I hear they must now hold a minimum of M.Sc and earn an annual salary equivalent of £20,000. In Nigeria, if you earn that kind of money and leave your job for here then you need to have your head examined! UK employers are now required to advertise positions at UK job centres and provide proof of inability to recruit workers from UK before considering recruiting foreign workers from outside the EU. How else do you want to be protected?
Chris: The contribution of immigrants to the UK economy is negligible though. Your economic benefit is only 4p a week for each person in Britain. Though you guys add to production, but you also add in virtually the same proportion to population. You are the beneficiaries at the end of the day; for example immigrants were able to send home about £10 million each day in 2007!
Magun: But we bring valuable skills and ideas with us and help pay for your public services and pensions, long after many migrants have returned home.
Chris: Why is it that in spite of the fact you guys are highly educated most are working in more low-skilled jobs? You are actually replacing low-skilled UK workers in certain jobs!
Harris: Phil Woolas, Immigration Minister, has said the UK wants to maintain the highest possible levels of British graduate employment by ensuring British jobs for British graduates!
Magun: And that is in spite of the Home Office’s estimation that HSMP visa holders outside the EU could boost the economy by up to £84 million in a year. They are allowed to stay initially for two years and after that, they and their families get booted out for failing to earn £35,000 in a recessed economy, which has seen unprecedented layoffs even of British professionals. Meanwhile these guys did sign documents pledging to make the UK their new home.
Harris: The government is not insensitive, I am sure it would factor the recession in when visa extension applications were made.
Magun: These guys are professionals who need time to integrate and show the stuff they are made of. They need not have stringent conditions imposed on them- look at Australia, Canada, New Zealand, etc. They do not take your life’s savings brought from your poor country only to kick you out after two years because you could not earn some digits! Stop attracting hard-working and honest professionals from their already disadvantaged countries only to pauperize and ‘remove’ them to their countries- they are worse off at the end of the day. The UK government should scrap the scheme to the Third World because it is further under-developing them if the government will not allow these guys to realise their dreams and return (if they wish) at a time they deem appropriate.
Chris: Did anyone force you guys to come? You cannot ask the Home Office to scrap anything- it is a free world! Go back to your country or move to Australia, etc.
Magun: Easier said than done, Chris!
Harris: Highly skilled migrants are not the source of terrorism and crime; they are not parasites on the British taxpayer. I sympathise with you, Magun.
Magun: why is the government happy to encourage unlimited immigration of unskilled and unemployable “assylum seekers?” why would it not deport illegal immigrants and why does it retain convicted criminals who should have been deported? Why does the Home Office target a group of revered taxpayers and their innocent children and responsible wives? What has happened to the suspected Filipino murderer found to be working in a care home here?
Harris: The Immigration intelligence report was produced more than two years ago but its findings have been ignored! An official actually said very few cases are acted on, while ministers continue to ignore them in the obscene interests of costs! These cases are not seen as a priority and most of them simply end up in the bottom of the pile!
Magun: 11,000 illegal immigrants were cleared to work as security guards but they wouldn’t approve an HSMP visa holder’s application simply because he mailed returned application back to P.O.Box of origin instead of another belonging to the same organisation; yet he sent an email the day after posting it to apologise for the inadvertent error.
Harris: It’s a ‘templated’ society; I therefore agree with you that recession does not exist in the Home Office’s template! Hello Chris, are you there?
Chris: I’m worried, guys. The gap between those of you coming to the UK and those leaving it will run more than 200,000 a year until 2012. About 70% of population growth over the next 25 years is expected to be due to migration. According to the ONS, population grew by nearly two million to 61 million people between 2001 and 2007, while it is expected to reach 77 million by 2051.
Harris: But compared with many western countries, long-term net migration flows into the UK are relatively small. Take for example, between 1971 and 2006 the UK population grew by 8.2%, while the US population grew by about 45% with international migration being the main driver.
Chris: According to Equifax more than a third of UK workers expect to earn less this year; 36% believe they will lose overtime or have their work hours reduced; 84% have yet to receive a pay rise and; one in four are concerned that their homes could be repossessed. How dare the Romanian (EU) former convict come over to the UK to rape a woman because he wanted to be sent to jail so he could learn English, be fed and educated!
Harris: I hope you are not starting an auction of anti-foreigner rhetoric. After all, there was a £220m EU-wide fiscal stimulus! That’s no licence to crime though.
Chris: We must put British people first or we all will risk fuelling racism.
Magun: Are you reminding us of the row over the recruitment of foreign workers at the Lindsey oil refinery?
Chris: Whatever! Canada is still looking to fill its 265,000 new immigration slots for 2009; New Zealand and Australia are looking for immigrants, etc. Why don’t you guys give these places a try? Anyway, Magnum, what does your name mean?
Magun: I will not tell you, but it’s akin to saying “from Highly Skilled to Illegal Immigrants- despite paying all taxes and not claiming benefits!”

Set a Schedule

If something comes up and you need to take some time during the day to handle is, you can drop what you are working on and take the time you need. One way to avoid that problem is to set a schedule and then sticking to that schedule. If your to do list requires 8 hours of work today, then you need to schedule 8 hours for your business. That does not necessarily mean 8 consecutive hours. If might mean 3 hours in the morning followed by a lunch break. The key here is to know how much time you need to devote each day or week. If something comes up that requires time away from your business, then you need to be disciplined enough to make that time up somewhere else.

Another problem arises when friends and family know that you are home every day. People tend to think that because you are home you are available. You need to be sure to let people know that you are not just sitting around the house watching soap operas and munching on M&M’s. You are home because you are running a home based business. They need to understand that in order to be successful, you need to devote your time and attention to that business.

That does not mean that you can never drop what you are doing on a whim, but it does mean that you cannot do that every day. If you need to allow time to be available for lunch dates, then you need to schedule for that time.

Shut Out Distractions

The final thing that gets in the way of running your business is the distractions that come from working in your house. There are a lot of distractions around your house, and they can very easily draw you from your business.

In order to be successful you need to focus on your business and shut out those distractions. You must be able to ignore the dishes that did not get put away, or the vacuuming that needs done. Those tasks will still be there when you are done working, but if you do them during “office hours” your business will suffer. If you can not shut out the distractions on your own, then you should find a place to work that you cannot see everything else that needs done. Set up a small office instead of working from the dining room table. If you do not see the household chores they are much easier to ignore.

Achieving home business success requires that you treat what you are doing as a real business. If you wok at it like it is a hobby, then your success will be limited at best.

Is Email Marketing Still An Effective Option For Network Marketing?

With email filters, blockers, and simply tons of unsolicited email, is email marketing still a viable option to build and grow your network marketing business? The answer to this question, in my opinion is "Yes, but."

Let's deal with the "Yes" first, then we'll deal with the "But."

I remember about 5 or 6 years ago putting about 400 leads into my autoresponder and enrolling about 8 - 10 people a month into my nutritional program. Today, if you had 10 times that many leads, you may get a couple of prospects, and maybe, maybe, one enrollment. It is true that times have changed, but that doesn't necessarily mean that email marketing is dead. Let's look at a couple of examples.

One colleague of mine from California literally cannot keep up with the large number of prospects inquiring about her program. She is signing up 10 - 15 people per month into her program which costs about $1300 to start. Eighty percent of her efforts are wrapped up in email marketing. She has gone through the learning curve and is what I would call, a professional email marketer. How many emails does she send? About 1 million per month.

Another colleague of mine from Georgia is enrolling about 30 people per month into his business, a $20 a month, non-nutritional program. He is not highly sophisticated in what he does, but is effective enough to send out about 250,000 - 300,000 emails per month.

What is the biggest difference between now and then? Numbers. With the vast expansion of the Internet and email marketing, it simply requires greater numbers to get results today. It is not uncommon for some folks to get a couple hundred unsolicited emails a day that you must compete with. With the billions of emails circulating on a daily basis, you need massive numbers to get results. So, how many emails should you send out? Keep reading.

Now let's talk about the "But."

The biggest downside to email marketing is that new recruits are weak. Email marketing is notorious for having a revolving door with new recruits. Why? There is no relationship involved except for exchanging a few emails. Email marketing is very impersonal, and without the relationship, there is no bond (or glue) to hold the new recruit in your business. Many leave as quickly as they come. So how do you overcome this?

With both of my colleagues whom I mentioned above, they are both fanatical about picking up the phone within a very brief time that the prospect visits their web site. One of the very first comments out of their mouth is "I wanted to give you a call and let you know there is a real person on the other end of the email." And it works!

Picking up the phone, reaching out and touching them, and beginning to bond with the new prospect or recruit are vital. If you are not willing to pick up the phone, then email marketing isn't going to be worth it for you. One of email marketing's strengths is sorting through the prospects, and then giving you someone to talk to.

So, how many emails should you be sending out in order to get enough prospects to talk to so you can build your business? As many as you can. From my observation, 100,000 leads are minimum. Anything less will not produce results for you. If it is within your budget, 300,000 is a better number. For the "email marketing professional," maybe one million is a better number. Whatever the number, you must be committed to constant, consistent effort, followed up by a personal phone call?

One final thought before we wrap this up. If you are going to involve yourself in email marketing, you must take the time and learn how to do it right. Understand that some people will complain about not wanting your emails, you will get undeliverable emails and blocked emails, and your autoresponder company may change their policies on you and you have to switch companies. But take the time to become a professional at what you do.

In summary, is email marketing still effective for building your MLM business? Yes. You simply must increase the numbers of emails you are sending out. But, you must also understand that you must pick up the phone and reach out and touch your prospects and new recruits or you will lose them. It is still a viable option for those who want to use this as a means of growing their network marketing business.
